What are Thrips?
Often called thunder flies, thrips are tiny insects that can cause significant harm to plants. They suck sap from leaves and flowers, leaving behind unsightly silvering and distorted growth.

Facts about Thrips
rips are very small, usually between 1.5 to 3 mm long, making them hard to spot with the naked eye. They feed on a variety of plant parts, including leaves, flowers, and even pollen. Some species also prey on other small insects. Female thrips can produce up to 15 generations in a single year, which can lead to rapid population growth.
Thrips damage plants by piercing and sucking out cell contents, leading to silvery-white discoloration, stunted growth, and distorted leaves and flowers. Some thrips species can transmit plant viruses, further harming your garden by spreading diseases. They affect a broad range of plants, from ornamental flowers to vegetables like onions, tomatoes, and beans.
Thrips have natural enemies like lacewings and ladybugs, which can help control their populations. Managing thrips involves regular monitoring and using biological controls or organic pesticides to minimize their impact while protecting beneficial insects.
How to apply Thrips Nematodes
Nematodes should be stored as soon as possible after delivery. They can be stored in the fridge or below 5oC until the expiry date on the package. Do not freeze or expose to high temperatures. Minimum soil temperature for application 5oC. The soil should be moist and should be kept moist for three to four weeks after application. Apply in the evening, when overcast or during rainfall. Water immediately after application. If you are using over plants, water the plants within 30 minutes of application to wash the nematodes
off the leaves and back onto the soil.
What to apply nematodes with
Apply the nematodes with a watering can with a coarse 1.4mm rose or a sprayer. If using a sprayer remove all filters finer than 1.4mm mesh. Spray using a maximum pressure of 5 bars through nozzles at least 0.5mm.
Step by Step instructions
Wet foliage before application.
1. Make a stock solution by emptying one sachet into 2.5L of water and stir continuously. Once mixed this
solution needs to be used within 4 hours.
2. Take the 2.5L of the stock solution and pour into your sprayer and mix with 4.5L of water stirring continuously to make a 7L solution.
3. Apply the solution as a foliar spray and directly make contact with the pest. Start spraying plants from the bottom up ensuring that the centre
of the plant is treated. Alternatively you can apply with a watering can, but ensure the plants are thoroughly soaked.
Each sachet will treat up to 30m2. At least 250-500ml of nematode solution should be applied per square metre. One nematode sachet is suitable for one treatment – repeat second treatment after 5/7 days. Check regularly for new thrips and repeat treatment if necessary.
