What are leatherjacket nematodes and how do they work?

Leatherjacket nematodes, like Nemasys, offer a safe and effective solution to combat leatherjacket infestations in your lawn. Leatherjackets, the larval stage of the crane fly, feed on grass roots, causing damage. Nematodes target and eliminate these larvae, promoting lawn health without the need to exclude children or pets from treated areas.

When should I use leatherjacket nematodes and how do I recognise an infestation?

It's best to use leather jacket nematodes when adult daddy-long-legs are spotted in your garden, typically towards the end of August. This indicates that they will soon lay eggs, which hatch within two weeks. The larvae then begin feeding, causing damage throughout winter and into spring. Look for greyish-black, legless larvae about 2.5cm (1" long) to identify an infestation.

How do I apply leatherjacket nematodes and what should I be aware of?

The application of leatherjacket nematodes is simple and comes with detailed instructions. They can be applied using a watering can or nematode applicator to moist soil when the temperature is above 5ºC (41ºF). Ensure the soil remains moist for at least two weeks after application for optimal effectiveness. Please note that nematodes are live organisms and cannot be returned. They typically have an expiry date of around 2 weeks and their effectiveness can vary due to external factors.
